Whoa! Did you know on Thursdays that every hour on the hour after 7pm, it's 'Carnival'! Whistles start blowing, music pumps out louder, feathers, sequins, shiny, slick, skin all around. OK, totally unexpected, not knowing that Thursday nights are Samba nights, we dined here and it was such a fun, surprising treat! So ok, the food is also really good. brazilian italian fare. We had the lasagna, short ribs, chicken, and risotto plus a few different apps and lots of vino. It's a fun environment and staff are super friendly, plus with dancing ladies all around you as you're eating, it was a fun way to enjoy your dinner, albeit more so for the guys than the girls in your party. Loved it! The brazilian beef was quite an experience, I guess it's the brazilian version of shabushabu. Avoid the cream corn soup, it tasted like it was doused with sugar. For appetizers, you must have the scallops and the puff pastries filled with cheese and meats. Yummilicious! A note about the staff - they're friendly enough, but our waitress forgot to bring our fried yucca and when we reminded her about it (midway through our dinner) she apologized and said she's going to get it. We decided to tell her that it's too late and to cancel it. She replied, "if that's what you want to do." Ummmm, nice. I reserve the right to change my Green Dot of Yummy to another color if the staff doesn't address their selective amnesia . Good luck, Mangarosa! Review #15989

I just had brazilian at a restaurant in Berkeley a few weeks before coming here and I wasn't too impressed. But the food at Mangarosa left me wanting more! You can easily feed two with the brazilian Steak Rechaud ($28). Yes, you do the grilling yourself on a hibachi, but that way, you can control how rare your meat is cooked. And it's so juicy and flavorful also. The brazilian cheese bread ($6) tastes like a hot Cheez-it, only it's bread. We also had the foie gras with the brioche ($17) and it was nicely seared and buttery, the sauce not overly sweet. The wine list was filled with a lot of $25-30 bottles, but we brought a $20 Foppiano cabernet since the corkage was only $15. Well, our waitress asked if it was a special occasion and we said we were celebrating our very first screw-top wine bottle. Maybe that made her chuckle, but when we got the check, she didn't charge us for corkage! So we got an excellent dinner and wine for about $70. Highly recommended! Review #14209

- pao de queijo - deliciously warm brazilian style cheese bread - amazing!! I LOVE IT!! - artichoke crab dip - crab, onions, grana padano and parmesan crostini - YUMMY - ahi tuna italian sea salt, pickled red onions, virgin olive oil and balsamic - I thought that was okay. It was a nice presentation. - foie gras with castelnau de suidurant sauternes 2000, Bordeaux France (delicious sweet white wine) Same size if you were to order the one without the wine. crisp potato, brioche and honey onion dem. I liked this dish it was delicious. - tender soft ribs I really enjoyed this. The meat slid off the bone. It was a bit fatty but it was still good. - brazilian steak réchaud -- AMAZING!!! It was delicious!! You have to grill it yourself. It's medium rare style meat served on the grill. Condiments you would provided were: salsa sauce, fried chopped garlic and bread crumbs with brazilian style seasoning. Good size for 4 people. Excellent tasty dish. A dish everyone should try. Rabelaisian portions so gigantic as to satisfy the most ravenous Pantagruel, radiant reception, service and ambience, brazilian italian Valesca reminding for all the world that your joie de vivre justifies her entire existence based upon your loving the place. Addictive cheese bread, enormous appetizers: copious, giant, succulent scallops in huge portions, foie gras pared with Sauterne french style. Gigantic entrees, Steak Rechaud, order one for two unless your appetite is Gargantuan. Not your standard homogenized, pasturized tasting beef, but like genuine Montana tasting. Jumbo short ribs so enormous you'll need an ambulance. Superb dolce de leche ice cream ultra smooth and carmelized. Spectacular Mendoza Mas Malbec 2003 kissed by God, one of the world's great wines at a bargain $28.00. A welcome relief from the arctic chill invading the City. Latin cuisine from France, Spain, Italy, Amerique du Sud has hegemony. (Note: Avoid Reservation Blues by using www.opentable.com). Review #12230

I had heard so many good things about this restaurant but was very disappointed by the reservations staff. I had left a VM on their reservation line to confirm dinner for two and never received a call back. When I called on the day of the dinner I was told that they hadn't received my request for reservations and were all booked for the night. I explained that my friend and I were celebrating an occasion and were looking forward to eating there- I received no help and was told not even to bother coming in for a walk in because they were all booked for the night. Truly disappointing because the staff was rude, didn't apologize for the oversight in my reservations and didn't make any attempt to help me with an alternate seating. Review #11906

We shared everything at this delightfully charming restaurant. We started out with the warm spinach salad ($10) which had grilled pears and warm fresh polenta croutons. The spinach was almost cooked but it was delicious nonetheless. Then we had the polenta scuffle ($12) which was outstanding! It's dreamy and warm with the right amount of everything. I asked the manager for one of those pieces of cheesy bread because all the other reviewers here said they were good. They brought an order out for free. They were outstanding! Parmesan and hot little nuggets of gold! Then we had the braised short rib ($21) which was huge. The sauce was strained (thank you!) and light. We ordered green beans sauteed in garlic and butter ($4) which were young and crispy. They had fried plantains too but after the polenta and bread I was being good. We didn't have dessert but it looked great with fried bananas with caramel. The food was so good and satisfying. Had wine with meal but cocktails looked good. Review #9362

Mangarosa is a fun place to get a drink called Capiorosa (which is famous in Brazil). They have a couple of different types, but I like the lime flavored one the best. The drink is somewhat sweet with a strong rum taste. You only need one to get a good buzz! Also, the staff were very attentive and answered all of our questions. Our waitress gave us tips on the different appetizers that were served on the menu. I had a great time.. Review #9050

YEAH for Mangarosa! I have yet to dine in North Beach and walk out saying---damn that was good...WELL I can say it now! EVERYTHING we tried was DE-Licious! From the Mangrarosa mojita (with Remy Red, coconut rum, muddled limes & mint--damn!!!) To the damn tasty brazilian cheese 'bread' really they are 6 small little tasty biscuits. The mangarosa salad with butter lettuce, dried cherries, fresh mango, candied walnuts, cambozola cheese w/mango & lime dressing was perfectly balanced. The seared boneless chicken w/balsamic was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The sides of yucca chips and creamed spinach were great additions. The service was GREAT!!! I wish I got our servers name --I'd ask for him again next time I come back (and I will)he was super friendly and knowledgable! But from the hostess to the bartender, to manager...everyone seemed to go out of thier way to make sure all was going well---and this was during the north beach festival! MUST TRY Review #7284

Coming back from the NB festival, decided to bounce around NB for awhile. The funny thing about North Beach is this is one neighborhood where I don't really have a favorite restaurant. I may have found one that will fill in for awhile. My fave italian isn't in NB, and Mangarosa is italian/brazilian. THey have patio seating outside which is nice to check out the street action, but the real action is in the bar and restaurant. I loved the mango/butter lettuce salad with goat cheese and candied walnuts, the "brazilian" bread which were these chewy cheesy and tasty biscuits, the luscious crawfish bisque, the fried yuca potatoes, creamed spinich, and the seared chicken w/12 year old balsamic. The wine list was small but well matched(the NZ sauvignon blanc, Chilean cab, and Aussie Shiraz) and their tasty rendition of a Mojito was one of the better ones I've had. The staff was great, the service was great, it was fun...loved it. I'll be back this week. Review #7282

Okay, this is probably my current favorite SF spot! The food is fantastic... nothing on the menu that I couldn't recommend! Savory flavors, and nice waft of smells coming from the somewhat open kitchen on one end of the dining room. I have dined with vegetarians and they have raved as well... there is something for everyone. The staff is consistently a pleasure to interact with. They have a nice wine list and they are able to help you select just the right one for your meal choices... and I have yet to be "sold up" on their suggestions compared to what I originally inquired about. Small plates, even the salads, work well to share, providing variety of flavors. Have also enjoyed going the route of individual entrees. Prices are v. reasonable. Atmosphere is upbeat... comfortable buzz of conversation around you, without being distractingly loud. Review #5065
