“
Sunflower restaurant in the Mission has some of the best vietnamese I have ever had. The menu is not grand but well rounded. All the dishes that I have been served over the years have been very well spiced, and cooked to the proper temperature. The Pho is fantastic, and to make it so, they start out with a wonderfully full flavored stock. There spring rolls have a fantastic texture and are filled with many tastey/fresh ingredients. Thumbs up! ”

“ Pho is relatively new on the culinary scene; it first showed up in North Vietnam in 1910. In the 1950's it spread to the South when the Northern communist government closed most private Pho restaurants and opened government run restaurants. Some say that Pho was a french influence and others say the origins are likely from China. Pho made it's way to the West by way of anti-communist vietnamese immigrants. When Pho is good it's the ultimate comfort food. I really wanted some hot tasty Pho on a cold windy day when I was out and about in the mission. I passed Sunflower and it looked crowded, so grabbed a seat. The Pho was bland and didn't stand up to my previous experiences. The portion size was generous for the price but the flavor was just not there. I might go back and try something else but not the Pho. ”

“ I was told that this was the Mission choice for lovers of Tu Lan, but I was not enthralled by anything that we ordered. Maybe I am conditioned to the style of food at Tu Lan, but the imperial rolls and shrimp fried rice at Sunflower paled in comparison to Tu Lan's. Admittedly, the interior of this place seemed much cleaner. ”

“ i wanted to love this place because it has lots of vegetarian options, including pho which is my favorite. i'm a recent convert to the land of the meatless so maybe i'm judging it by the wrong standards but good lord was this the blandest pho i've ever had. i enjoyed tastes of other dishes and would give it another go, but its not on my list of musts. ”

“
This is a great spot for lunch in the Mission. What you want to do is order one of the lunch plates (on the back of the lunch menu). You get a ton of food (for about $8) on a plate the size of a manhole cover. The vegetarian sweet-and-sour soup is about the best I've ever had and everything else is fresh and flavorful. You can even ask them to substitute fresh spring rolls for the fried ones that come with the lunch plate. The only downside is that if you sit in the 16th St restaurant, you'll walk away with your clothes smelling like lunch. I'm guessing the exhaust problem is not such an issue around the corner at the Valencia St restaurant. ”

“ I love the huge portions of fresh yummy rice noodles over a bed of veggies. This place offers a veggie sauce to go over your noodles (sans fish sauce), if are so inclined. I just wish they had fried veggie spring rolls to put over the rice vermicelli. Okay so they do offer this, but they take a fresh veggie spring roll, wrapped in rice paper, and fry it. The consistency is a little off. They should use different wrappers when frying veggie rolls. Other than that, I have always been appeased here. And the waiter who is ALWAYS there, and flirts with my hubby, makes me giggle. ”

“ One of my friend's fave restaurant when he was living in the city. We ordered the garlic noodles, grilled giant shrimps and the soup. The food is pretty good for the price. The garlic noodles was good but I think Thanh Long probably has the best.

“ We ordered food for a meeting ,and it went over very well! The garlic noodles were great. The string beans with tofu was very good as well. Also had a chicken dish with noodles and broccoli, don't know the name, it was good. There was a miscommunication on the order, we tried to order a total of 10 spring rolls as appetizers and instead got 5 meals of spring rolls, rice noodles and shrimp which shot the price up significantly and left us with way too much food. Food was great. I'll be stopping in for a single meal to try their other dishes and see what the service is like.

“ I go often to get my chicken bun fix. They dole out big pieces of flavored chicken and one can sub. imperial rolls for non-fried rolls. The fish sauce is key and really good. Too bad it's far from where I live. I remain loyal

“ Service was decent and friendly. The food has been great every time we've gone, but this latest round was the best so far. We started with the spring rolls (love the mint leaves inside!), and followed it with the curry chicken and eggplant and onion in garlic sauce. delicious all, with food left over. Will definitely be going back. ”

“ The food here is very delicious. The prices are pretty reasonable, but the service sucks. The waiter insisted that we tip him 30% even though he did not do a very good job worthy of it. I haven't gone back. ”

“ Great food, big portions. Yet moderate prices. Despite the name, it's not exactly authentic vietnamese food, but tasty nonetheless. Has a bit of a california spin to it. ”

“ Love the Sunflower! The pot stickers are fantastic little balls of sticky rice stuffed with pork and deep-fried to a crispy golden-brown. Really good. I like the pork vermicelli with imperial rolls. I order it frequently. I've tried the Pho, as well. It's good. I've had better.
There's only one kitchen, but they have two dining rooms. The one on 16th at Valencia is a little more cafeteria-like and garish. I prefer to walk around the corner to the dining room on Valencia at 16th where the lighting is more flattering. Have a glass of wine, relax, and for heaven's sake, order the pot stickers! I don't know why this place isn't a bigger hit. ”

“ Place is OK. Soups are good. Fresh spring rolls are lacking. Had bad experience with staff as they insisted on seating us near the door when there were seats in the back. I know they want the place to look full, but I was freezing that day and didn't want to feel a chilling draft thoughout my meal. Next couple after us got a cozy seat near the kitchen. I requested a table change and he reluctanly moved us to another table. Hope there wasn't anything icky in my soup after that. ”

“ With two locations -- one on Valencia at 16th, and the other on 16th, you don't have to miss great vietnamese food at Sunflower. Try the vietnamese crepe (I always get vegetarian), crisp and delicious, and rolled w/tofu, grated carrots, sweet and sour sauce, and cucumbers in a big leaf of lettuce. Or, the signature dish of Sunflower prawns over garlic noodles: a perfect melange of sweet and spicy! I took my parents here, (they live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a country without even good chinese food), and they loved the flavors and textures of everything. You don't have to be fearful, there are old standards on the menu w/beef or chicken. But, venture out! Prices are cheap. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, but with patience, the right parking spot will sit you close to the right restaurant: Sunflower. ”

“ I have to love a place that sells vegetarian pho! It was delicious... and a huge serving. The deep fried veggie rolls were a little too oily... and not served with enough lettuce for wrapping. Will definitely go back soon though. ”

“ Quite nice indeed. Nothing fancy but thats not what I was looking for.
Very filling and good portions. A number of nice vegetarian options - I tried both the Garlic Vegetables and the Curry Vegetables, which were both tasty, although the curry was a bit better because of the spice factor.
The appetizers seem to be on the large side, which is a plus!
Good prices, service and hours! ”

“ I absolutely love this place! I have to reccomend the garlic noodles and spicy string beans. For a treat try the Sunflower Prawns which are on top of a bed of the garlic noodles. The sauce is so delicious (spicy & sweet) and the prawns are huge! ”

“ I've been here a couple of times and have yet to be disappointed. 4 can easily fill themselves silly with an appetizer, beer and entree for about $50 (not bad!). I recommend the BBQ Pork noodles with Vege Roll. ”
