“ i thought the place was alright. my friend thought it was good. a lot of heavy foods on the menu like macaroni with cheese and chicken, meatloaf, things like that. it didn't leave me with a lot to say. waitstaff was nice enough, tho. ”

“
Went here for lunch today while my building fire alarm was being tested and I couldn't get my usual sleep until 2pm( I work nights). I had the Blue Burger and it was quite tasty. Although Blue has changed ownership the menu is still the same with all the great comfort foods. They also have daily specials including fish. Today's was Salmon or Halibut (2 of my favorites when I feel like fish...)
If you go here for dinner expect to wait for a table or grab the outside table and if it is cold they will turn on the heater for you. The other option is to make reservations.
The place is not ideal for a large group (more than 6).

“
Not very comforting to me. My host insisted we had an off-night. Really off. The first-three items were not available. Service was inattentive. Comfort does not equal "bland." I understand the Mac & Cheese is good, but why dine in S.F. when Kraft has it in a box? At least they offered "mayo" on the side which lubricated the esophagus as the dry bread wanted to lodge prematurely. At least I had french fries with mayo (no catsup, either). The french prefer vinaigrette, probably a wise choice. This one was not. ”

“ Used to be a favorite stop for me in SF. Good food and good service. But the service has gone downhill. My last trip eating in, the food was just ok, not great as I had expected in the past. Then on my most recent vist, I got an order to go of the Mac and Cheese I had remembered so well. Very disappointed. Small portion at regular price and it was very greasy and bland.
I think a previous reviewer called this "tired". I agree.. ”

“ Food was decent (had mac and cheese, friend had salad). Service was ok (nothing special). Prices a little high for what you get but on par with SF restaurants. ”

“ I have eaten here a few times, but not since late 2004. I noticed a decline in the quality the last time I was there and I haven't been in the Castro much lately, so haven't been back. They were pretty good for the price range with big quantities you could share. The salads and fries stick out in my memory as having been really good. ”

“ In my opinion - there is one reason to go to Blue - and that is quite simply that they have the best mac and cheese in the city. Add the grilled chicken - and a salad to start and you have a very filling meal for under $20 bucks that you can't beat. It is always good for people watching - just be prepared to get to know your neighbors. They also have a decent inexpensive wine list. Don't go expecting Jardiniere and you'll enjoy it. I did. ”

“ Yuck! Yuck! Yuck! Why go here when there are so many better places? I used to love Blue, but something has changed for the worse: it was always slow, but now it's super slow, and the food is terrible! They've combined the brunch menu with the lunch/dinner menu, which was an interesting change. I went with a friend, and ordered the Eggs Florentine. I asked specifically for the english Muffin to be crisp, since in previous times, it's been undercooked. Though the restaurant had only two other tables of two, our meal took 20 minutes to arrive, and when it did, the english Muffin wasn't cooked at all, the potatoes were hard -- the cook had dumped parmesan cheese on top for "flavor" -- and the fruit was not ripe. My friend ordered eggs, which were not cooked well, and again, experienced underripe fruit and uncooked potatoes. With so many fantastic restaurants in the city, why go for mediocre? I will not return to Blue. ”

“ Crowded, narrow, and on-top-of-each-other cafe, offering quixotic "comfort food." After much praise, a few of us went to dinner around 6 p.m., and every dish we ordered was no longer available. My second choice was a club sandwich that was tasteless and on a hamburger bun that lacked the usual ingredients. Whatever they served, it wasn't close to being a "club sandwich." My friend's dish was equally disappointing. He, having eaten here before, said he should have stayed with the macaroni and cheese. Who wants M&C when they dine out? ”

“ Not a fan of this restaurant. The macaroni & cheese was unbelievably bland, and the caesar salad was entirely too heavy on the anchovy paste (the dressing was dark brown, there was so much in it!). Some friends love it, but they tend to like "middle America" comfort food. Not my cup of tea. ”

“ I love comfort food and I was excited about dining @ BLUE. The restaurant is tiny and was packed, so I had high hopes for the food. The menu didn't have as many options as I would have liked, but I chose the mac and cheese and meatloaf. The mac and cheese was solid but the meatloaf off the recommendation of the friendly waiter disappointed. The meatloaf was DRY, but also had a horrible "marinara" topping and the mashed potatoes tasted like they were out of the box. I should have had the osso bucco. Place was busy the whole time and the wait staff were extremely friendly...but, I would say Home is a better option for some comfort food for about the same price. ”

“ Cute little spot, efficent service...comfort style food. I wanted to like this place I love homestyle food...but this wasn't it. We shared the french onion soup-yuck. It was gelatinous---never a good thing for soup of anykind. It tasted like a beef gravy base watered down then cornstarch added to make it thicker. It had a couple of croutons on top with VERY little cheese. NOT GOOD. I ordered the meatloaf---not a wise decision. Very dry with a wierd relish/marina sauce blend on top. The garlic mash tasted like they came out of the box, the carrots were OK...but cold. My dining companion had the mac & cheese ---the best call of the night. Very nice and cheesy...good flavour.
It is an affordable place, and maybe some of the other items are better...we might have had a bad night. I MAY try it again down the road. ”

“ Fantastic, homey, well priced. This guy owns Luna and other restaurants in the neighborhood and they are all good. Blue has AMAZING osso bucco (stewed, tomatoey pork shoulder), great mashed potatoes, good daily grilled fish. They also have a really cheap daily lunch special which is usually a regular menu item just made cheaper, and the portion is just as ample, for like 6 bux. Great spot. ”

“ Fun high-grade diner-fare favorite! An occasional call for communal family-style seating with strangers and a bathroom navigation that requires an adventurous stroll through the kitchen aside, Blue is great. BIG portions! The macaroni and cheese is positively sinful! The poppy seed mini-muffins they serve with breakfast are addictive. Also recommended are the monster mimosas & gianormous salads. Service is speedy and great. Atmosphere is a bit industrial but very clean. ”
